FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AES-256-GCM?

AES-256-GCM is an authenticated encryption algorithm using a 256-bit key. GCM mode provides both confidentiality and integrity, making it one of the most secure choices.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. All encryption and decryption happens locally in your browser using the Web Crypto API. Your text and passphrase never leave your device.

What if I forget my passphrase?

The data cannot be recovered without the correct passphrase. This is by design – there is no backdoor. Keep your passphrase safe.

How is the key derived from my passphrase?

A random salt is generated and combined with your passphrase using PBKDF2 to derive a strong 256-bit key. The salt is stored with the encrypted output.

Can I decrypt data encrypted by other tools?

Only if they use the same format (AES-256-GCM with PBKDF2 key derivation). This tool uses a standard, documented format.
